The best way to approach this is to think what you did as a child. Did you play with Legos or did you watch Cartoons? Did you like numbers or words? This all relates to you and your passions. It is easier to do the work you love. If you are not sure what you like take this completely free test. After you get your results check what work best suits you here.Â
Once you know what you want to do, you have to put in the hours. Let’s say you want to be a Writer. You have to learn everything related to that calling. SEO Analytics, Content Management Systems (CMS), Social Media Platforms, just to name a few. Spend a good amount of time on getting familiar with all terminology and work on your skillset. Best sites to learn for free are: YouTube, Reddit, Quora, Capelance, and Khan Acadamy.
If you ask us Upwork and Linkedin are your two best options. After working on your skillset it is time to work on your backbone. Work on your portfolio and digital presence. Do projects for yourself and do them for free for the people you know might need something you can now offer. Anything you make will be used to asses your worth once a potential client looks at your profile.Â
If it was easy everyone would have a good paying online remote job. But guess what, it is not, and that is why people that do have it cherish it. You have to work hard to be able to get your first client. Contantly think what am I offering to them that makes me a good hire. Am I cheaper, better, more creative or more organised than everyone else who might apply. If you can not answer such questions, you will probably not get hired. To increase your odds, you can develop your backbone and have your friend hire you through Upwork or Linkedin so you have a visible proven track record. When a client picks their Freelacner they asses: Portfolio, Work History, and Proposal. Work on making these as perfect as possible for your unique case.Â
Best advice we can give you is to have a side job, something that pays the bills while you are developing your online presence. After you nail the basics that is, learned important skills for your niche, made a profile, had at least 2-3 passion projects, and most importantly are ready to commit you can start sending proposals and outreach. The hardest battle is the first project, as it will require most time and energy. But then it is mostly smooth sailing. What is your angle and why should someone pick you compared to other Freelancers is key. If you do not know this, your odds of getting an online job are slim. After you fight your way through digital obstacles and get your first project (P1) you leverage that to get P2. And constantly change your proposal, and how you structure your prior works in relation to your potential new client. You have to learn and iterate your way to success, as everyone has a different angle and offer.Â
When you complete a few projects you will sense what works and what does not. You will fall in love with the process and it is an endless loop of constant improvement. There is no end but you have 2 main options. Become so good with your process that you have more client demand than you can meet, then you outsource help. You pivot to being a manager and have others work certain parts of your work and you become an organisation or small company. OR you can just stay a one man operation and raise your rates to balance demand. You can find potential partners for your projects on our Discord.Â
